Most newer neighborhoods offer clubhouses, walking and jogging trails, tennis courts, fitness centers, swimming pool and playgrounds.  Madison County is home to a wide variety of community parks, greenways, public spaces, nature preserves and wildlife sanctuaries.  In fact, one-third of Huntsville - 46,000 acres - is green space.  

The Tennessee Valley offers a variety of options for retirees. Retirement communities offer maintenance-free living in apartment, cottage, and patio homes sites with views of the Tennessee Valley mountains near Redstone. Some communities offer a percentage of refundable entrance fee that ensures estate preservation. In addition, on-site assisted-living and skilled-nursing care is available. Amenities in some communities include restaurant-style dining, housekeeping, a fitness gym, a beauty salon, transportation, underground parking and most are pet-friendly.

 The cost of living is 10 percent lower than the national average, according to the Council for Community and Economic Research's ACCRA Cost of Living Indes.  Evaluated next to comparable technology communities like San Jose, Calif.; Richmond, Va.; Orlando, Fla.; Raleigh, N.C.; Austin, Texas, and Charlotte, N.C.; Huntsville beats all six by significant margins in the overall composite index as well as in housing, utilities and health care.

On a $400,000 home in D.C. or Seattle, standard property taxes will run approximately $5000 to $6000 per year.  In Huntsville and the City of Madison, property taxes on a $400,000 home would be approximately $2200 to $2300.  In Madison County the taxes would be less. The low cost of living and high quality of life surprise many newcomers to our area.
